- Rivers state government are collaborating with the management of Spanish giants Real Madrid to build a football academy in the state
- Wike who believes that the academy would empower youths in the oil-rich state 
- The Rivers governor has been an ardent follower of the Spanish club 

Rivers state government are collaborating with the management of Spanish giants Real Madrid to build a football academy in the state as confirm by the state governor Nyesom Wike on Tuesday May 15. 

Wike who believes that the academy would empower youths in the oil-rich state, said while addressing journalist said:“We have young men who want to be coaches, who will be trained in Spain,” “We have our young boys and girls who want to go and play football in Spain. 

“This partnership is with the best club in the world and it’s in the interest of all.” Wike, whose state government sponsors top Nigerian club Rivers United said that the president of the Confederation of African Football, Ahmad Ahmad, will perform the foundation-laying ceremony for the academy in Port Harcourt on May 28, the day of an international friendly between World Cup-bound Nigeria and DR Congo. 

The Champions League winners are expected to build the academy which will also be used to scout and promote players to the team in Spain.
