Pittsburgh prep star turns down scholarships after seeing 'Concussion'

After watching the movie “Concussion,” a Pennsylvania football star turned down a bevy of scholarship offers over concerns about his long-term health. Mars (Pa.) Area senior tight end and defensive end John Castello rejected offers from more than a dozen Football Championship Subdivision schools, including traditional powers James Madison and New Hampshire,   according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette . Castello arrived at his decision upon seeing the story of Dr. Bennet Omalu, whose 2002 discovery of a degenerative brain disease caused by the sort of repetitive head trauma that is common in football was portrayed by Will Smith in a film released this past December. “The head injuries were a huge reason for my decision,” Castello told the Post-Gazette. “I’ve liked both football and basketball for some time. I wasn’t totally sure what I wanted to do. Then, that movie ‘Concussion’ came out and some interviews came out. I watched one interview with Dr. Omalu where he was talking a

President Buhari is Free to Send Me on Assignments – Jonathan

Former President Jonathan says President Buhari can send him on any assignment, depending on the type and whether he has the capacity to carry it out. Jonathan said this while speaking at a ceremony organized by International diplomats, the Cercle Diplomatique, based in Geneva last week. “I am former president and I cannot throw myself on the new government. It depends on the assignment the current president decides to give me and also depends on if I have the capacity to carry out such assignment. He is our president and can decide to send people on assignments based on national interests. When I was in office, I used to give assignments to former presidents and that is how it has always been. I am free to work for my country and indeed for any other African president that considers my service valuable"he said

Jonathan’s Government Bought Substandard Weapons’ – Alhaji Lai Mohammed

The Federal Government has said whatever weapons that were procured by the Jonathan Administration for the military to prosecute the war against terrorism were substandard and could not have been responsible for the string of successes recorded by the military in recent times. In a statement issued in Abeokuta on Monday, the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, described as unfortunate and unsubstantiated the statement credited to former President Goodluck Jonathan attributing the recent successes in the war to the weapons allegedly bought by his Administration that were delivered after he had left office. He said the present Administration owes it a duty to put the record straight, especially because the issues raised by the former President are of public interest and borders on national security. ”The weapons, munitions and equipment which the former President said he bought were refurbished and lacked the basic components and spare parts. Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State, has advised President Muhammadu Buhari to respect the democratic principles of separation of powers by allowing the judiciary to do its job in proper prosecution of people accused of corruption. In a statement on Monday, by his Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, Governor Fayose also urged the President to tell Nigerians the truth about the Boko Haram insurgency, saying, “They keep telling us that they have defeated Boko Haram technically while Nigerians are still being killed daily by Boko Haram, with over 100 people killed in Dalori, less than 12km to Maiduguri, Borno State capital. “Isn’t it now necessary for the President to fulfill his promise of leading from the front and getting his Information Minister, Lai Mohammed to go an

Ekitigate: A get-back scheme at Fayose?

Chilling and damning. These best describe the revelations last Sunday of the alleged rigging of Ekiti State 2014 governorship election for Ayo Fayose. Like a man under a spell, ex Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) secretary of the state, Dr Temitope Aluko, regaled the nation with heart-wrenching specifics of how ex-President Goodluck Jonathan allegedly made $37million, plus military might available for the victory of Fayose. According to Aluko, who was the chief returning officer for Fayose at the poll, Jonathan gave express directives to security chiefs to allow Fayose function as the Commander-in-Chief (C-in-C) on his behalf for the poll that he won in all local governments in the state. Based on this presidential directive, Aluko, who headed the Security and Logistics unit for the campaign, alleged that soldiers practically received instructions from Fayose. The security apparatus were compromised, leading to massive arrest of chieftains of All Progressives Congress
