Ekiti promises credible LG poll

Abiodun Nejo, Ado Ekiti
Ekiti State Government on Monday promised to change the narrative of compromise associated with local government elections by ensuring rancour-free, transparent and council polls devoid of manipulations in December.

The state Commissioner for Information, Mr Muyiwa Olumilua, said there will be repercussions for any group or individuals who may attempt to thwart efforts aimed at achieving peaceful and generally acceptable elections.
Olumilua, who spoke at a press briefing addressed by members of the sensitisation committee on the council polls, allayed fears in some quarters that elections would be compromised, saying, “If anybody wins, the state has no problem about that, but I don’t think a local government election is worth the blood of any man.”
The commissioner, who chairs the committee comprising officials of state government and National Orientation Agency, said it was set up to sensitise the people to prevent bloodshed during the election, adding that it was not intended to usurp the responsibility of the State Independent Electoral Commission.
He said, “We must have council elections free and devoid of violence and those plotting to cause trouble will be dealt with.
“We are giving assurances that this election is going to be a clear departure from the past when the ruling party would have it all.”
