As part of the federal government’s evacuation program for Nigerians stranded in Libya, 465 persons arrived the country on Friday, February 2. Channels TV reports that they arrived at the Port Harcourt International Airport on board Max Air. More Nigerians are still expected to be repatriated as the government looks to meet the over 5,300 target of Nigerian returnees. The National Assembly has moved towards addressing the migrant issue and ordered the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to invite the Libyan Ambassador to Nigeria and discuss how to end the slave trade in the country. Photo Credit: NEMA Twitter Meanwhile, the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) in a recent report disclosed that one family member in 10 households in Edo state has undertaken the extremely risky journey by road or sea in search of greener pastures. According to the report published by The Guardian, no fewer than 153,000 people arrived by sea to Italy, with 96,000 being from Sudan, Somalia, Eritrea, The Gambia, Mali and Nigeria, while Nigeria accounted for over 22,000.
